Almost $1 billion dollars committed to evolving Westmead into a global biomedical research hub

Westmead is Australia’s largest health and biomedical research precinct. The NSW Government has committed more than $900 million for Stage One of the Westmead Redevelopment project, which includes the construction of a new acute services building that will link Westmead Hospital to The Children’s Hospital. 

The project also includes a $95 million refurbishment of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and significant refurbishments to Westmead Hospital. Almost one third of the existing hospital will be renovated between 2017 and 2022.

University Developments In Westmead

Dedicated medical campuses from leading Australian universities

The University of Sydney and Western Sydney University have campuses in Westmead. Both universities are planning to expand. Total investment for these plans is worth almost $1 billion. 

Student numbers in Westmead are forecasted to grow from 3,400 to 8,500 over the next 10 years. 

In the longer term, the proposed $500 million University of Sydney Parramatta-Westmead campus will create space for an extra 25,000 students, generate 20,000 jobs, adding $13 billion to the economy by 2050.

Transport Developments In Westmead

Sydney Metro West heavy Rail and Parramatta Light Rail projects will transform the way Westmead is connected to Parramatta and Sydney.

Parramatta Light Rail

Construction of Stage One of the new Parramatta Light Rail, which will run from Westmead through to Carlingford via the Parramatta CBD, is scheduled to start in 2020 and expected to be completed by 2023. 

The Parramatta Light Rail will revolutionise the way workers, residents and students access Westmead.

Sydney Metro West

As part of the $3 billion Sydney Metro West project, the NSW Government has also committed to building a new underground metro station at Westmead.

Work has started with geotechnical investigations and other technical studies underway to determine the best route alignment. The project is moving closer to the planning approvals phase.

Westmead Innovation District Master Plan

To achieve the vision for Westmead, the Westmead Innovation District Master Plan project has been jointly commissioned by City of Parramatta and NSW Health. The master plan includes aspirational targets for jobs and tertiary students, driven by the significant government investment currently planned for the area.

The Westmead Innovation District Master Plan project will result in the development of a Master Plan that will feed into the DP&E’s Planned Precinct process.

More Parramatta Precinct Plans

$27 billion dollars of public and private investment will take place in Parramatta in the next 5 years.


The Parramatta CBD is located in the geographical heart of Sydney. It’s otherwise known as Sydney’s Central River City. The precinct is undergoing significant growth and revitalisation.


Sydney Olympic Park is a 640-hectare residential, commercial, education and entertainment precinct, 14 kilometres west of Sydney’s CBD and 9km east of Parramatta. It boasts 430 hectares of green space and parklands and seven sporting venues.
